About Us
All Saints in the Mountains, Crested Butte, is a small, self-sustaining Episcopal mission church. We meet for Sunday worship at 5:00 pm at Queen of All Saints Roman Catholic Church in Crested Butte. We have a membership of approximately 50, comprised of full-time residents, second home owners, and visitors. Attendance can vary from a handful during off-season, to nearly 200 on Christmas Eve. Average attendance is 10 to 20.
We hold a monthly Bishop's committee meeting in Crested Butte. Throughout the year we Schedule pot-luck fellowship dinners. We do as much financial outreach as we can in the local community and beyond.
Purpose Statement
All Saints in the Mountains is a loving community where all people are welcome. We heed the Gospel's call to be servants and to provide an Episcopal presence to the community in which we live. It is also our purpose to provide such an atmosphere of caring and acceptance by God, that people who visit this chapel will go home, knowing they have been touched by the Living Lord.
A Short History of All Saints in the Mountains Episcopal Mission Church
The first record of our church is November 29, 1988. Father Bill Campbell conducted weekday services in his home for three years. In July, 1992, services were transferred to the Senior Citizen's Center and were conducted on Sundays.
Father Jim Janks replaced Father Campbell in May, 1993. The time of our service was changed to 5:00 pm, to enable Father Jim to conduct his regular services at Good Samaritan in Gunnison. When the Senior Center was closed, services were held in the Catholic Church.
After six years service, in October, 1999, Father Jim Janks was replaced by Father Newby, both at Good Samaritan and at All Saints. Father Newby served three years and retired in October, 2002.
Sister Clare Connell then took over - at both the Church of the Good Samaritan in Gunnison and All Saints Chapel in Crested Butte.
Currently we are enjoying the services of Father Bill Waltz. He has been with us for three years.
A note from Withrow Meeker:
"Hi, Deanna-
I am getting back to you as you requested concerning the Eucharist vessels for All Saints of the Mountains Church.
It must have been 1988-89 during the winter. Bill Campbell, our priest for several years, and his wife Anne were renting a house from Tim Wirth in Crested Butte. Because we had nowhere to hold services since the Senior Center building had been sold, we held Sunday services in the Campbell's small living room. The altar was a card table with a cloth on it and but 3 pottery vessels on top. John Meeker was a very friendly, exuberant person. We had just returned to C.B. for some skiing and he was so happy to see Bill. John rushed over to Bill, accidently kicked the table leg. and the vessels came crashing down. John was so embarassed. He told Bill just get anything you want and send me the bill. With great wisdom and taste, Bill ordered a number of vessels to be created by Donna Rozman. Hence, this is the source and story behind our very special eucharist vessels.
Lesson: don't get too excited when you see an Episcopal priest you know.
Cheers, Withrow Meeker"
